Journal Article · · J. Irish Med. Ass., v. 66, no. 5, pp. 117-126
fetus is exposed in utero. Emphasis is placed on factors that produce delay in development, congenital malformations, and maligaant disease later in life. With regard to ionizing radiations it was found that all studies indicated that the increase in cancer risk associated with exposure to x rays in utero was 50 to 100%. Japanese data indicated a lack of increased mortality from cancer among the children who were irradiated in utero by the atomic bomb explosions in Japan. However, the production of congenital malformations by ionizing radiations was demonstrated by the high incidence of microcephaly among infants irradiated in utero by the atomic boinb explosions in Japan. In utero exposure to the following hazards are also reviewed: drugs, viral infections, smoking, and dietary deficiencies.
