From 5th international conference on internal- friction and ultrasonic attenuation in crystalline solids; Aachen, Germany (27 Aug 1973). Results of a study on the effects of gamma irradiation and annealing on the attenuation of hypersonic compressional waves in quartz and tourmaline crystals are reported. The defect concentration in the crystals was altered by successive doses of irradiation and subsequent annealing, and the effects of these changes on the ultrasonic attenuation were studied. The data relating to overall attenuation behavior is correlated with the attenuation theory of Silverman. (GE)
