Physical and biological effects: CANNIKIN

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4405975· OSTI ID:4405975
Data are presented from a survey of the effects of the Cannikin underground nuclear explosion, November 6, 1971, on Amchitka Island, Alaska. Data are included on surface disruption, ground shock, water pressure, hydrology, and seismic effects; radioactivity released; effects on the sea otter population and other marine life; effects on terrestrial vegetation; effects on fish in freshwater ponds and streams; and effects on bird populations. None of the observed effects were attributed to radiation. No radioactivity above normal background levels was found in air and biological samples. Tritiated water found in ponds was attributed to levels in the chimney pushed to the surface by rising water. (CH)
