Nuclear energy in Eastern Europe (in German)
To further the development of nuclear energy in its member countries, the COMECON founded in 1960 the permanent COMECON Commission for Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy with headquarters in Moscow. In this commission Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Germany (Democratic Republic), Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the USSR participate. Within the USSR there are at present 16 nuclear reactors in operation. In the other COMECON countries, nuclear development has so far been slow. Eastern Germany and Czechoslovakia are the only countries with one nuclear power station each in operation. A new program published in 1971, however, has the objective of installing about 10,000 MWe nuclear capacity until 1980 within the COMECON countries outside of USSR. Nuclear power stations to be constructed before 1985 will be mainly of the PWR and RBMK type developed in the USSR. In the USSR, reactors of these types with a total generating capacity of 30,000 MWe are to be installed by 1985. After this date, fast breeders of the type developed in the USSR will be constructed. A complete survey is given of the energy situation, the short- and long-term planning, and the role of nuclear energy within the COMECON countries and describes in detail the development and the construction of the Soviet reactor types as well as the nuclear power programs of all COMECON countries.
