Thesis. Electrons were caught in traps in gamma -irradiated alkali ice (10M NaOH) at a temperature of 77 deg K. The temperature dependence of the photoelectric current produced between 4 and 120 deg K and the agreement of the wavelength dependence of the photoelectric current with the absorption band show that there is no stable excited energy state for the electron in the trap. The traps have an average depth of 0.048 eV and indicate lattice deformations due to the presence of O/sup -/ ions. For highly resistant materials, an apparatus was developed for measuring the Hall movement in which the sample rotates in a magnetic equilibrium field and an interrupted light beam procedures the moving electrons. A phase and frequencysensitive measuring method enabled the true, free from interference Hall signal, which occurs in the total frequency of both modulations, to be measured. The hall movement of the photoexcited electrons on alkali ice has a value of mu /sub Hall/= 4.7 plus or minus 2.3 cm/sup v/sup -1/ sec/sup -1/ at a temperature of 83 deg K. The temperature dependence of the Hall movement was measured between 80 and 130 deg K. (GE)
