Periodic systems of quadrupole lenses

The properties of periodic systems of quadrupole lenses are investigated. The most general system, consisting of a sequence of lenses rotated with respect to one another by an angle THETA , is considered in the thin lens approximation. Analytic expressions are obtained for the stability limits of such a system and for the lower limit of the acetance. It is shown that for THETA = pi /2 and for small theta these expressions go over into the corresponding expressions obtained earlier for the systems used to shape muon beams ( THETA = pi /2) and for helical quadrupole lenses. It is shown that the procedure used to calculate the acceptance gives the correct dependence on the system parameters, but underestimates the exact calculations by a factor of 1.5. The equations are used to compare various periodic systems. (auth)
