An attempt was made to apply instrumental neutron activation analysis to the determination of trace elements in high-purity aluminum and iron samples. The elements, Na, Se, Cr, Fe, Co, Zn, As, Sb, Ba, La, Ce, Sm, Tb, Lu, Hf, and Th, were determined for Al samples, and the elements, Al, V, Cu, Co and Mn, for Fe samples. Some of the determined values were compared with those obtained by mass spectrometry elsewhere. When carrying out activation analysis of trace elements in a high-purity material by irradiation with reactor neutrons, special attention should be paid to the radioactivities produced from the matrix elements through other reactions than (n, gamma ). The reactions /sup 27/Al(n, alpha ) /sup 24/Na and /sup 56/Fe(n,p) /sup 56/Mn interfere with the determinations of Na impurity in Al and Mn impurity in Fe, respectively. The determinations of Na in Al and Mn in Fe were made by irradiation with neutrons of high cadmium ratio. However, the determination of a few ppM Cr in Fe was difficult because the reaction /sup 54/ Fe(n, alpha ) /sup 51/Cr is induced not only by fast neutrons but also by thermal neutrons. (auth)
