The use of gas adsorbents, ash of brown coal, and powdery building materials for the decontamination of radioactive sewage was investigated. The model water containing several radionuclides is stirred with the adsorbent or filtered through a layer of it. The gas adsorbent is able to remove more than 90% of the radioactivity. An efficiency of up to 99% can be obtained for the decontamination of /sup 90/Sr//sup 90/Y by application of the other materials, depending on the addition of small amounts of Na/sub 2/CO/sub 3/), NaHCO/sub 3/, NaF, or NaOH. Detergents and complexing agents diminish the decontamination. (auth)
