Kinetics of exchange between americium(III) and europium ethylenediaminetetraacetate

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. Nucl. Chem., v. 35, no. 12, pp. 4255-4269
The kinetics of exchange has been studied for Am/sup 3+/ and EuEDTA in an aqueous solution of 0.1 M total ionic strength with acetate buffer. The kinetic equation involved both acid dependent and acid independent terms. Possible mecharisms consistent with the complete rate equations of the two (acid dependent and acid independent) paths are proposed. The two paths have approximately equal probability at pH 6.4. An increase in the acetate buffer concentration increases the rate of the acid dependent pathway but decreases that of the acid independent one. The effects of buffer concentration can be explained in terms of complexation by acetate of either the free metal ions or the metal-EDTA complex. (auth)
