In structural design of nuclear power plant facilities. The engineering ideal is to start with a correct specification of the earthguake ground motion that the structure will experience and accurate physical properties of the structure, and then to compute precisely the seismic responses. However, this is not practically possible. Since the frequencies of the structure can only be approximately computed because of the linear and nonlinear deformability, the energy dissipation, variation in elastic properties of both structure and foundation and the idealization of structure with lumped masses and elastic properties in discrete pants parametric studies have to be performed in order to take into account these variations for construction of floor response spectra. Moreover, damping ratios associated with the foundation-structure interaction as well as those of the superstructure cannot be readily determined. Hence, these parameters will also affect development of floor response spectra. (10 references) (auth)
