Suggestions for the analysis of pipe whip restraints in nuclear power plants
- eds.
In structural design of nuclear power plant facilities. The designer of pipe whip restraints must contend with a variety of problems not encountered in routine practice. The combined effect of blowdown and impact forces is usually sufficient to strain both the pipe and restraints well beyond the elastic regions. It is suggested that the non-linear dynamic solution be approximated by a single- degree-of-freedom energy balance analysis based on conservative assumptions. Thus, emphasis has been placed on deriving relatively simple expressions that can be applied to typical pipe whip restraint design problems. Some consideration is given to means by which account can be taken of other phenomena such as strain rate effect and stress resultant interaction. (7 references) (auth)
