For the detection of medium-energy light particles, a 96 channel hodoscope has been built to be used in the focal plane of a magnetic spectrometer. The signal from a multiwire proportional chamber is coded by a fast addressing system eoupted to a multichannel analyser. A spatial resolution of 1 mm and a time resolution of 20 ns have been obtained. The maximum counting rate is about 0.2 MHz. The amplification circuit for each wire is adjusted to obtain the same efficiency with a precision of 3%. Several experiments with scattered protons, deuterons, /sup 3/He and alpha -particles have been performed over a wide range of targets. The stability and the viability of the wire chambber are quite good. (auth)
