Ruthenium metal on an alumina support was found to be suitable catalyst for reforming of methane with CO{sub 2} or steam and reverse reaction, methanation of synthesis gas. These reactions are under study for the development of a Solar Chemical Heat Pipe, for storage and transport of solar energy. The catalysts containing 1--4% Ru were tested for activity, selectivity and stability under simulated solar conditions of varying energy input. Long term testing of the catalysts was carried out and the kinetics of methanation and reforming processes on Ru catalysts was investigated. The kinetic models for CO + H{sub 2} methanation and reforming of methane with CO{sub 2} were developed.
