Ionization structure of planetary nebulae. X. The contribution of charge exchange and optically thick condensations to [01] radiation

Journal Article · · Mon. Notic. Roy. Astron. Soc., v. 164, no. 2, pp. 111-119
Recent theoretical and observational investigations have demonstrated the importance of condensations in enhancing the line emission from ions of low ionization potential in planetary nebulae. However, model nebulae which include high-density filaments, and which satisfactorily explain the observed fluxes of the STA0 II and STAN II! lines in the nebulae, have been unable to account for the observed flux of STA0 I! lambda 6300. We suggest that this problem is due to the neglect of charge-exchange reactions in normal photoionization models of nebulae. Calculations are presented which show that hydrogen-oxygen charge transfer H/sup +/ + 0/sup 0/ in equilibrium H/sup o/ + 0/sup +/ is a n important process which governs the ionization equilibrium of neutral oxygen, and that it acts to increase the emission of STA0 I! significantly.
