Effect of a local absorber in absorber theory

Journal Article · · Nature (London) Phys. Sci., v. 246, no. 151, pp. 40-41
It is stated that in a recent experiment (Partridge, Nature 244: 263 (1973)) a null result was found, to 1 part in 10s, for the effect of a local absorber as the power emitted by a sourc. This result was interpretcd in the framework of absorber theor as setting some constraints on the absorptive properties of the Universe. The present author points out, however, that this conclusion is by no means necessary, and that a time-symmetric static local absorber should have no effect on the power emitted by a source, irrespective of the absorption of the Universe.
