New morphology of polyethylene prepared by $gamma$-ray-induced polymerization

The gamma -ray-induced polymerization of ethylene was carried out in the presence of mica plates with cleavage surfaces covered by evaporated carbon. By using this method of polymerization, the effect of solvents exhibiting various affinities toward polyethylene on the morphology of the nascent polymer can be studied. Polymerization of ethylene in cyclohexane produced large platelet crystals composed of folded chains, while polymerization in bulk and in methanol gave small granular particles and complex aggregates.
