Manufacture of fuel for nuclear reactors

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4382043
Available from the Commission of European Communities, Luxembourg. A mixture of fission-product-retaining fuel particles, a polymerizable resin, and granular matrix material are pressed in a die cavity under substantially isothermal conditions at a temperature at which the resin melts but does not suffer a change in structure and, together with the matrix material, exhibits a plasticity that allows compaction throughout the die cavity. Sufficiently isothermal temperature conditions may be achieved by heating the die, die plungers, and die contents in an oven at a slow rate of up to about 4 deg C per minute. It is advantageous to employ a polymerizable resin which is chemically unchanged during the heating and pressing stage. A phenol formaldehyde resin having a low orthocomponent is suitable, the formaldehyde/ phenol ratio of which is less than one but nevertheless close to unity. (EU)
