Europium-151 Moessbauer spectroscopic studies of after-effects of the electron-capture decay of gadolinium-151 and the $beta$-decay of samarium-151

/sup 151/Eu Moessbauer spectrometry was used to study the aftereffects of electron-capture decay of /sup 151/Gd and BETA -decay of /sup 151/Sm in inorganic and organic lanthanide compounds doped with these nuclides. No charge state other than /sup 151/Eu/sup (III)/ was observed following nuclear decay in lanthanide oxides and fluorides doped with /sup 151/Gd or /sup 151/Sm. However, both the bivalent state, /sup 151/Eu/s up (II)/ and the tervalent state, /sup 151/ Eu/sup (III)/, were observed following the electron-capture decay of /sup 151/Gd- doped organic lanthanide compounds. The effects of varying temperature, the organic ligand, and the lanthanide matrix element were investigated. The presence of water of crystallization was not essential for the production and stabilization of /sup 151/Eu/sup (II)/ in lanthanide oxalates. The presence of a conjugated organic ligand in /sup 151/Gd-doped compounds suppressed the formation of /sup 151/Eu/sup (II)/. (auth)
