Absolute fission cross-section measurements

Advances were made over the past year in both new experimental facilities and in important measurements. Facilities were provided for safe handling of plutonium samples, and work is underway on the measurement of the / sup 239/Pu fission cross section at 964 keV. A new photoneutron source was also developed and applied in measurements on /sup 235/U at 260 keV. Work was completed on a measurement of the /sup 6/Li-(n, alpha ) cross section and represents one of the very few absolute measurements made in the keV energy range. Measurements on the /sup 235/U fission cross section at 964 keV, largely completed last year, were extended to improve the estimated precision of the result. (auth)
