Effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the spin-lattice relaxation in superconductors with an electron transition

The effect of an electro transition on the concentration of the reciprocal of the spin--lattice relaxation time T/sub 1/sup -1/ of nuclei is stu died for superconductors with nonmagnetic impurities. An expression for the correction to T/sub 1//sup -1/ in a superconducting metal due to an electron transition is obtaincd by means of the Green's function technique. It is shown that the change in the topology of the Fermi surface of conduction electrons due to the introduction of nonmagnetic impurities gives rise to a nonlinear dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation time on the impurity concentration. This nonlinear dependence of T/sub 1//sup -1/ can be attributed to the change in the Fermi energy epsilon /sub F/ and to the effect of scattering. The correction to T/sub 1//sup -1/ due to the electron scattering by impurities depends only on the frequency of the electron-impurity collisions, whereas the change in T/sub 1//sup -1/ related to the change in epsilon / sub F/ because of the impurities is different for acceptors and donors. The relative magnitude of the correction to T/sub 1//sup -1/ depends on the magnitud es of the effective masses. (auth)
