The predictions of Loevinger's (Radiation Dosimetry. Academic eress. New York (1956)) formula and transport theory in respect to exponential absorption are compared. The dose rates to the skin are calculated from a plane source both under infinite medium conditions, that is with the source in finite tissue, and under finite medium conditions, that is with the source on the surface of the skin. The transport calculations for an infinite medium are compared with Loevinger's formula as a test of the validity of the one-group approach. The finite medium transport calculations are compared both with infinite medium results and with Osanov et al.'s results (Health Phys.; 17: 489 (1969)). (UK)
