The circular polarization of gamma rays from the capture of polarized thermal neutrons in aii isotopically enriched target of /sup 57/Fe was measured. The analysis of 19 primary transitions resulted in unambiguous spin assignments for 14 bound states of /sup 58/Fe. For five of these, at Ex = 4.02, 4.14, 4.32, 4.36, and 4.44 MeV, all with J/sup pi / = 1/sup +/, no spin assignments have been reported previously. The gamma -ray energies and intensities of these transitions were measured. The /sup 57/Fe(n, gamma ) reaction Q value was determined to be 10044.6 plus or minus 1.0 keV. A significant correlation between the (d,p) strength and the (n, gamma ) reduced transistion strength was found for p-bound states with E/sub x/ = 0 to 5 MeV. (auth)
