Development tendencies of the sodium fast breeder (in German)
Since the beginning of the fifties twelve experimental sodium breeders have been built, of which eight have already provided some years of operating experience while the remaining four are still not in operation. Since the end of the sixties, this phase of experimental reactors has overlapped the construction of prototype power stations with capacities of around 300 MWe. In Western Europe the phase of demonstration power stations is now being planned and this is regarded as a transition to the commercial utilization of the sodium fast breeder. The fast breeder demonstration power stations superphenix (France), CFR (Great Britain), and SNR-2 (FRG) are at present being planned in an international collaboration of the electricity industry. The pre-planning of these demonstration stations is in each case now taking place at national levels by the manufacturing industries and research centers, but there are strong tendencies toward the creation of international groups. The German-Belgian-Dutch collaboration in the SNR-300 is a first start in this direction which will also be continued for the SNR-2. The pre-planning work for the SNR-2 began in the middle of 1972 by the German firm INTERATOM. A capacity of up to 2,000 MWe has been taken as a basis for the preliminary plan. (GE)
