Elastic processes at large momentum transfer

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics. B
A covariant version of the composite model of Blankenbecler, Brodaky and Gunion for electromagnetic form factors at large momentum transfer is developed paying particular attertion to gauge invariance for which a general condition is derived. It is found that the asymptotic behavior of the form factor is dominated by the current interacting with partons which carry nearly all the longitudinal momentum of their parent hadron. The theory is then specialized to the particular model of Blankenbecler, Brodsky and Gunion and a natural Bethe- Salpeter model for the hadron-panton-core vertex is introduced. Spin is then included and the asymptotic behavior of the pion and nucleon form factors is derived. Elastic proton-proton scattering at large momentum transfer is then discussed. (auth)
