Atomic-absorption spectrophotometry has been applied to the determination of magnesium, calcium, and strontium. The work was carried out with a Unicam SP 90 atomic-absorption spectrophotometer with air--acetylene flame accessories. The slit width was 0.1 mm and the burner length was 10 cm. The acetylene flow rate was 1.5 liters per minute and the oxidant flow rate was 4.5 liters per minute. Chemical inter-element interferences and ionization interferences were investigated. Conditions for interference-free operation for the determination of Mg, Ca, and Sr in saline were discussed. In more complicated situations, the addition of a deionizer and a releasing agent may become necessary. (auth)
