Method for the optimization of fusion reactor neutronic characteristics

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4375911
From national topical meeting on mathematical models and computational techniques for analysis of nuclear systems; Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA (8 Apr 1973). In mathematical models and computational techniques for analysis of nuclear systems. A method for the optimization and analysis of fusion reactors nucleonic characteristics is described. The method can handle both nucleonic and nonnucleonic properties of the system either as the parameter to be extremized or as the restraint. The nucleonic characteristics are treated as bilinear functionals, and the optimization method is based on variational techniques. The control variables are material density distributions. Numerical examples, based on transport calculations, are given for four different types of optimization problems and for perturbation analysis. Special features of the method are discussed. (auth)
