Synthesis of sulfonated cation-exchange membranes based on acenaphthylene and polyethylene, and study of the influence of irradiation and heating on their properties

Translated from Zh. Prikl. Khim.; 46: No. 7, 1462-1487(Jul 1973). The radiation and thermal stability of RMK-101p membrane subjected to irradiation in a /sup 60/Co gamma -ray source was studied. The membrane was synthesized by grafting acenaphthylene from a continuously stirred saturated solution in aqueous acetone onto powdered high-pressure polyethylene of pa4ticle size 0.250.5 mm. RMK-101p membrane was heated in water at 75, 100, l20, and 150 deg C, in 3N HNO/ sub 3/ at 50 and 75 deg C, and in 3N HCl and 3N KOH at 75 deg C. The results of these studies showed that for heatresistant ion-exchange materials styrene copolymers are preferable to acenaphthylene copolymers. (LK)
