Many BWR radwaste treatment systems utilize a precoat filter followed by a deep bed demineralizer to treat equipment and floor drain filters. Three to five cubic feet (ft) of precoat material is used each precoat cycle. This spent precoat material is disposed of as radwaste and is a major portion of radwaste expenditures at some plants. Equipment drain water typically is low in total dissolved solids (TDS). The deep bed demineralizer has ample ion exchange capacity to remove the TDS challenge. In actual practice, the filter demineralizer cycle is terminated on differential pressure buildup, not TDS removal. New technology in the form of high surface area pleated filters has made non-precoat condensate filtration a viable option in power plants. This technology provides an economically attractive application for radwaste equipment drain processing. This paper will outline the parameters important in non-precoat filtration for radwaste applications as well as present some plant experience data. Several additional plants have plans to test non-precoat filters in the near future. The economics of non-precoat filtration versus precoat filtration will be discussed.
