Safety logic system of the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) at Kalpakkam provides for a scram (dropping of all the control rods under gravity) a set-back in power (partial lowering of rods) or a gradual lowering to shut down of all the control rods. Various measures (parameters) and incidents leading to a safety action are described. A two-out-of-three logic is adopted which is automatically converted to a one-out-of-two logic on failure of one of the redundant channels. Physical redundance and geographic and power source independence of the inputs are described. The logic hard-ware is solid-state (RTL). Since solid state logic design is not absolutely fail-safe, an on-line fine impulse test has been introduced for early detection of unsafe as well as safe faults developing in the logic. The test consists of injecting shont trip signals sequentially at all the scram m- puts and verifying the good propogation of these signals up to the power gates. The test system consists of a generator, a modulator, an address block and decoding matrix and a fault detection block. It is expected that the fault will be repaired at the subsequent reactor shutdorvn. (INIS)
