Thallium was named after {open_quotes}thallos{close_quotes} the Greek word for green twig. In 1861, Sir William Crookes discovered thallium by its green spectral line, while performing spectroscopic analysis on tellurium in sulfides. This dense, soft, malleable, and highly toxic element was isolated a year later by Crookes an Lamy, and is the last element of the group IIIA in the Periodic Table. Its physical properties are similar to lead, but its chemical properties are more like zinc.
