High temperature method for the conversion of chlorinated organic compounds to methyl chloride for isotopic analysis of chlorine and carbon

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including the common solvents TCE, PCE, CCl{sub 4}, CHCl{sub 3}, and TCA, are the most frequently detected groundwater contaminants in the United States. These compounds are EPA priority pollutants that are known or suspected to be carcinogenic or mutagenic in humans. They are readily transported by groundwater. The ability to measure the stable carbon and chlorine isotopes of chlorinated VOCs could be useful in tracing sources of these compounds and their breakdown products in the environment. This paper describes a non-aqueous analytical method by which both carbon dioxide and methyl chloride are produced from the same sample of material for isotope analysis of carbon and chlorine.
