Mercury (Hg) methylation in sediment is favored under anoxic conditions, and is linked to sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). The role of SRB in Hg methylation has been extensively investigated in recent years. Additionally, oxyanion-forming elements of Group VI, including MoO{sub 4}{sup =}, WO{sub 4}{sup =}, SeO{sub 4}{sup =}, have been shown to affect bacterial sulfate reduction, either by competitive inhibition of SRB or a noncompetitive inhibitory mechanism. We have investigated the effect of ambient concentrations of these oxyanions on mercury methylation in the Carson River system in western Nevada.
