The application of TiO{sub 2} (titanium dioxide) as a photocatalyst for the purification and treatment of air and water is of great interest in recent years. For photocatalysis processes, the most suitable semiconductor is TiO{sub 2} (anatase). Chemical inertness, non-photocorrosibility, and nontoxic influence on microorganisms makes TiO{sub 2} interesting for application in waste water treatment. Most studies related to such photodegradation reactions have been carried out using powdered TiO{sub 2} suspensions in the polluted aqueous solutions. In the case of dispersed TiO{sub 2} an increase of photocatalytical degradation efficiency is observed compared to immobilized TiO{sub 2} applied in fixed-bed configurations. However, in a practical application, immobilized TiO{sub 2} is preferable to dispersed fine TiO{sub 2} because it does not need additional equipment and energy for the recovery of catalyst particles. In this research work, the authors have attempted to immobilize a catalytically active high surface area TiO{sub 2} films on solid supports and used these films for the degradation of phenol in aqueous solutions.
