The determination of uranium by high-precision spectrophotometry

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4372228
A procedure is described for determining the uranium content of relatively pure samples of U3O8 and uranium metal with a precision of +- 0.04%. The sample is dissolved in nitric acid and this solution is then converted to standard conditions of acidity by evaporating to fumes of sulfuric acid. After dilution with water to a standard column, the absorbancy of the sample solution is measured at 430 mu, using reference solution of accurately known uranium content. The uranium content of the sample is then obtained by either referring the absorbancy difference to a calibration graph or by calculation using a factor derived from the calibration graph. The main factors which influence the accuracy of the determination are discussed in detail.
