Valves self closable in the event of reverse flow, particularly for fast- fission liquid metal cooled fast reactors
The valve construction described comprises an elongated outer casing, with inlet and outlet connections, and a similar inner casing. The vaive member, which is open in the absence of flow, or with forward flow, is self-closable in the event of reverse flow occurring at the outlet connection. An operating shaft is provided for purposefully closing the outlet port, together with seals for closing off the annulus between the inner and outer casings on both sides of the inlet connection. Application to a liquid metal cooled fast reactor is described. The transverse dimension of the inner casing is a maximuma at the seals, so that the casing can be slid into and out of the outer casing together with the valve member and operating shaft. A gas disentrainment device is provided for disentraining gas from the liquid metal flowing through the valve and exhausting it along the inside of the inner casing. The inlet may comprise longitudinal perforations in the inner casing, covered with wire gauze, and the valve member may be provided with a damper to allow controlled and smooth movement of the valve member to the closed position under reverse flow conditions.
