New criterion for the onset of slugging

This paper presents a two-step approach used to extend the method of characteristics and stability analyses of one-dimensional two-phase flow equations to the derivation of a new criterion for the onset of slug formation. In the first step, a more general form for the onset of slug flow criterion is derived based on the bifurcation theory (nonlinear analysis); more specifically, analyses of singular points and neutral stability conditions of the transient one-dimensional two-phase flow equations of two-fluid model are used. In the second step, simplifications are introduced and a parameter is incorporated into the general expression derived in the first step to satisfy a number of physical conditions a priori specified, thereby deriving a new criterion for the onset of slug flow.
