Environmental status of the Hanford reservation for January--June 1968

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4369340· OSTI ID:4369340
Data are presented on the radioactivity in environmental samples collected within the Hanford plant boundaries during the first half of 1968. Data are included on the total alpha activity, total BETA activity and content of /sup 90/Sr and tritium in samples of Columbia River water; the total BETA activity in samples of drinking water; the content of /sup 51/Cr, /sup 95/ Zr--Nb, /sup 103/Ru, /sup 106/Ru, /sup 134/Cs, /sup 137/Cs, and /sup 144/Ce--Pr in samples of surface waters; the total BETA activity and content of /sup 131/I in samples of surface air; the total alpha , BETA , and gamma activity in samples of air filters; and the estimated external radiation exposure rates to personnel. Routine monitoring surveys of plant roads with a gamma spectrometer were carried out. Increases in atmospheric BETA activity were related to increased fallout deposition. A temporary increase in atmospheric /sup 131/I concentrations was related to release in gaseous wastes. (CH)
