The Biostack experiments carried out with Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 are discussed. The object of these tests was to investigate the HZE particles regarding their charge and energy distribution and their effect on biological objects. In order to obtain a clear-cut assignment of radiation damage and HZE particles, the biological objects were firmly connected with nuclear detectors. Nuclear emulsions, silver crystals, and plastic detectors were used. Seven organisms of known and differing sensitivity to conventional ionizing radiation were used as biological objects, Germination and cell growth in single cell organisms and development, growth, and mutations in plant and animal organisms served as criteria of radiation damage. Cosmic radiation HZE particles caused complete destruction, malformation, and retarded development. (GE)
