Speciation of inorganic arsenic and selenium in marine sediments

The presence of arsenic and selenium in the environment may be due to activities related to industrial processes and also to natural processes such as weathering of minerals. The marine environment is not spared from pollution, especially those located near industrial plants. Sediment core samples were taken along a coastal area in an industrial zone and treated using microwave heating. Samples were preconcentrated to separate the inorganic arsenic species and inorganic selenium species from elemental interference and later determined quantitatively using the 559-keV gamma peak of the arsenic{sup 76} for arsenic and the 265-keV gamma peak of the selenium{sup 75} for selenium with a hyperpure germanium detector.
