Evolution of UFTR neutron activation analysis laboratory quality assurance program
- Univ. of Florida, Gainesville, FL (United States)
The University of Florida training reactor (UFTR) is a light-water-cooled, graphite and light-water-moderated, Argonaut-type reactor. Currently, the UFTR utilizes highly enriched (93% {sup 235}U), plate-type fuel in a two-slab arrangement. However, analyses for conversion to low-enriched fuel are near completion. The UFTR operates at a power level of 100 M, providing a peak thermal (subcadmium) flux of 2.3 x 10{sup 12} n/cm{sup 2} {center_dot} s. This thermal flux is well suited for use in instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Consequently, the UFTR facility is used frequently for elemental analysis of various sample materials for a variety of disciplines including a number of outside universities and colleges under the U.S. Department of Energy Reactor Sharing Program. Project quality assurance requirements are discussed.
