Neutron activation analysis in industrial quality control
- Univ. of Montreal (Canada)
The SLOWPOKE reactor facility at the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal relies on its commercial neutron activation analysis (NAA) service for most of its funding. This service has been built up over the past 15 yr with the development of analysis techniques tailored to the needs of industry and with an increase in clientele due mainly to communication among users. Thirty-five industrial plants in Canada and the United States sent samples for analysis in 1995 for quality control of their products. One key aspect of NAA gives it a distinct advantage over other analytical techniques for industrial quality control: The absence of matrix effects implies that accurate average concentrations of many elements in bulk samples can be measured easily with no sample preparation. Thus, industries developing new materials will choose NAA for controlling the composition of their products rather than acquiring special analytical equipment for each material.
