Pulse-shape discrimination in the proportional counting of tritium betas

The advantages of pulse shape discrimination used for the reduction of background in the proportional courting of tritium betas are discussed. Experimental results obtained by both meson anticoincidence and PSD are compared. In the 3 to 15 keV energy range the background was reduced 15-fold to a significantly lower level than with meson anticoincidence, while the tritium counting efficiency was reduced by only 10%.
