Methods for measuring moisture in saline soils using neutrons (in Russian)

A neutron probe which contains both thermal neutron and capture gamma counters, for measuring the moisture and chlorine content, respectively, of saline soil, is described. The cadmium screen of the thermal neutron counter can be adjusted to allow counting of epithermal neutrons also, for use when anomalous absorbers (B, Li) are present which do not emit capture gamma radiation. For evaluating the neutron-neutron interference, a probe with two thermal neutron detectors at different distances from the source may be used, so that the thermal neutroncount does not depend on the moisture. Experimental work verified the usefulness of such an instrument. (TTT)
