The 75,000 kW generating plant at Cerro Prieto, Mexico is beginning operation using superheated steam from depths of 4,000 feet surrounding the extinct volcano. The experiment began in 1958. Steam used to turn the Japanese- made turbogenerators can be condensed into salt-free potable water, and ultimately used for irrigation. The Mexicali Valley south of Cerro Prieto is an extension of Imperial Valley. (MCW)
