A soil sample originating from weathering of granite was sieved into six kinds of particle size. The conterts of natural radionuclides in each classified soil sample and the radon and thoron exhalation from it were measured. Both the contents of /sup 226/Ra (parent nuclide of radon) and /sup 224/Ra (parert nuclide of thoron) were found to consist of two components for the samples of more than 10 mesh; one is proportional to the total volume of soil particles and the other proportional to the total surface area of soil particles. On the other hand, the contert of /sup 40/K showed no remarkable variation with particle size. The thoron emanating power was found to be 30 to 40 percent. It was revealed that smaller soil particles have more cortribution to the radon and thoron exhalation from the soil surface than larger soil particles, (auth)
