Silicide coatings on molybdenum obtained by electrotransport and diffusion from molten fluorides

Experimental researches were performed for obtaining hightemperature oxidation-resisting silicide coatings on molybdenum. The treatment was carried in molten fluoride electrolytic baths from which silicon was cathodically deposited on molybdenum under conditions that favored its diffusion in the base metal. Optical microscopic information was obtained about the diffused layer thickness as function of the current density, and about the structure of the layer. The nature of the coating layer was established by x-ray diffnaction analysis and by microprobe analysis (x-ray images and quantitative analysis by direct emission x-ray spectroscopy). The obtained coating layers were compact and uniform, perfectly coherent with the base metal, with constant silicon content on their whole thickness, and were identified as consisting of MoSi/sub 2/ , a compound which imparts to molybdenum a very good resistance to high- temperature oxidation.
