In order to establish the economy of equipment for a food irradiation treatment plant, the most suitable conditions including radiation source irradiation system, physical flow system of irradiation matter, and automatic transportation system were discussed. The relationship especially between problems on radiation source engineering (radiation source, irradiated matter, irradiation technique, shielding, and radiation detection), and physical transportation flow system and apparatus was described in the case of potato irradiation. The radiation sources were mainly /sup 60/Co and /sup 137/Cs and a pellet or a disk is generally suitable. Limitation conditions necessary for transportation of the radiation source must be considered in planning of radiation source elements. The maximum or the minimum value of exposure dose is determined with regard to radiation effects and safety on foods. Build-up factors and radiation index decline are regulated according to the size of the irradiation matter. The ratio of the distance between radiation source and the container to the length of radiation source must be constant to obtain the uniformed utility efficiency of the radiation source, and the transportation system should be regarded for obtaining the most suitable conditions. Shielding materials and their necessary amounts are determined taking into consideration the irradiation device, irradiation room, and the size of the irradiation. The irradiation equipment system is composed of the radiation source and radiation source running gear and safety equipment for radiation protection. The arrangement of the radiation field, countermeasures against radiation, and safety standards should be established considering the above-mentioned conditions. (JA)
