LMFBR spent fuel transport: parametric studies

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4363068
A computer code (LMYHA) was developed to aid in the parametric analysis of LMFBR spent fuel shipping casks. Subject to imposed technical restrictions on temperatures within the cask and total cask weight, the code generates minimum cost designs for a variety of shield and coolant materials and fuel containment concepts. Calculations made for shipment of spent fuel from the Atomics International Follow-On LMFBR indicate that minimum costs would result from the shipment of uncanistered fuel using an internal coolant of sodium in a steel- shielded cask. If the fuel must be contained in welded canisters because of the possibilfty of failure of cask seals, lowest costs would result from the use of a sodium coolant inside the canisters and either air or nickel shot outside the canisters. These conclusions were not changed by credible variations of the economic assumptions, imposed limits on allowable temperatures within the cask, and the type of LMFBR fuel element. (auth)
