To determine the demixing limits, the cross sections NbO-- TiO, NbO-- Ti/ sub 3/O, Nb-- Ti/sub 3/O and Ti-- NbO, and the cross sections containing 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 at.% Ti were investigated. It was found that Nb-- Ti/sub 3/O is a quasi-binary cross section and the demixing region is enclosed within the concentration triangle Nb-- Ti/sub 3/O--O. The simultaneous presence of titanium and oxygen in niobium leads to layer separation. During layer separation, titanium, which has a high affinity for oxygen actively reacts with it to form lowdensity oxides, which become detached from the heavier niobiumbased alloy. At high contents titanium combines practically all the oxygen. During this process niobium is refined. If the titanium content is insufficient, complex oxides containing niobium as well are formed. The high affinity of titanium for oxygen, and the low density of the titanium oxides formed, are apparently the cause of layer separation in the system titanium--niobium -- oxygen. (auth)
