The research and development program for the Organic Moderated Reactor (OMR) was undertaken at Atomics International late in calendar year 1956. This program is directed toward the development of practical concepts and components for a power reactor utilizing an organic fluid as the moderator and coolant. The program is separate from that of the Organic Moderated Reactor Experiment (OMRE), which is for an experimental reactor facility to be operated at a site at the National Reactor Testing Station. Experiments will be conducted at the OMRE site to answer specific questions on the use of organic fluids in a reactor core. The OMR research and development program is comprised of a group of separate projects which will complement information to be provided from the OMRE program and which will give engineering answers to problems involved in reducing the organic moderated reactor concept to practice. The present report is the first quarterly progress report on the OMR program and summarizes the objectives of the individual projects and the early results which have been obtained during this period.
